I’ve been photographing wildlife for three years now and I find that you are always learning. I upgraded my camera to the Canon R7 on the recommendation of Mal. I wanted to enhance my skills and improve the images I was taking. I met Mal for a tuition day to photograph the Rut at Bradgate Park on Sunday the 22nd of October 2023.
I wanted to master composition, foreground bokeh, and difficult light situations, and be in complete control of all my settings on my camera. Mal adjusted my camera settings. Shooting in Manual, Mal guided me in which was the best aperture, ISO and shutter speed for certain subjects and light-intensity situations. It was very interesting when he changed my white balance settings to enrich the Autumnal natural colours.
The morning was very misty with the most beautiful sunrise, making it incredibly difficult to focus on the deer. With harsh light and mist, Mal guided me through the settings. I was totally blown away by his creativity and extraordinary skills as he knew exactly how to capture the subject and the required camera settings.
Mal explained various techniques with back and side light. How to enhance the subject creating a glow around the deer, and capture breath (deer) shots. What stood out was his style and techniques with creative dramatic details in harsh lighting conditions and low light always being in control of the ISO, aperture and shutter speed.
His energy and enthusiasm are extremely inspirational. He had me lay on the ground to get the best out of the situation and subject I was photographing. We explored both landscape and portrait shots. He gets you to think outside the box at all times, all at complete ease and clarity with his guidance.
What added to my amazing experience with him was his love and total respect for nature. He has over 40 years of experience in wildlife photography and his knowledge of the natural world and environment are second to none.
I can not thank Mal enough for his patience, and the time he has spent with me no matter how many questions I asked, he talked me through it step by step perfectly in a language I fully understood. His praise and encouragement go a long way and I am so grateful for his kindness and support.
I can wholeheartedly say I feel I have mastered what I set out for. Nailing composition while taking the photo along with the concept of feeling confident in the settings makes you feel you have worked on the success of your own work. I noticed I didn’t spend as long editing my photos as I got it right whilst taking them and this is all down to Mal.
I cannot recommend Wild Lens Images tutorials enough, with complete value for your money. If you’re at a stage where you want to improve your skills and take things to the next level, in natural surroundings don’t hesitate to reach out to Mal. I promise you’ll come away with the confidence and images you’ve dreamed about. I know I have.

I’ve practising Wildlife photography for a couple of years now but seemed to struggle with sharp wildlife images and to get images that I was happy with. I didn’t have the confidence to shoot in manual mode however I spent a few hours with Mal as my mentor, showing me the way with manual mode and I managed to come back with some cracking shots. I’ll never go back to shutter priority and auto ISO again
